With the full-season teams enjoying another travel day and the Cubs getting off to head to Tampa Bay, the focus again shifted to the kids as it was Rookie League Monday in the Cubs system. Mostly, all three of their rookie league teams have been playing well, and that continued with a 2-1 showing on Monday.

DSL CUBS RED 7 - DSL DODGERS 5: We are now four games into the DSL Red season, and the Cubs have yet to lose a game as they improved to 4-0 with a win over the Dodgers. This was an exciting game as the Cubs were down 2-0 before scoring seven times in two innings to take the win.

With Javier Bartolozzi tossing four scoreless innings with four strikeouts and Emilio Ramos tossing a pair of scoreless frames for the Cubs, this was a 0-0 game entering the fourth when the Dodgers broke through first on a balk mixed with the Jose Gonzalez single. Trailing by two in the fifth, the Cubs offense picked the perfect time to come to life, scoring seven times in the next two innings to grab the lead.

Four of those runs came in the fifth with a pair of bases-loaded walks leading to two runs while the Robin Ortiz single put the Cubs in front 4-2. With the Dodgers managing to tie things up on a pair of fifth-inning singles from Eduardo Rojas and Roger Lasso, the Cubs offense got rolling again in the sixth as they took the lead for good.

Andrws Cruz put the Cubs back in front with an RBI single, but the two-run blast by Daniel Campos proved to be the winning hit in the Cubs 7-5 win. Campos led the Cubs with three RBIs, with Ortiz and Cruz each collecting two.

DSL PIRATES 10 - DSL CUBS BLUE 9: In an offensive explosion from both sides, the Pirates got the best of the Cubs as DSL Blue has now dropped three straight after starting the year 2-0. Already with a 2-0 lead after the Isaias Dipre homer in the first, it was the Pirates breaking the game open as they added four runs in the second to take the 6-0 lead.

Two of those runs came off a sacrifice bunt and a walk, with Cristian Jauregui delivering the massive double to make things 6-0. Still in the second, the Cubs offense started to get rolling as they answered the four-run inning with four runs of their own. Ivan Cespedes opened the scoring for the Cubs with a homer before RBI singles from Alexey Lumpuy and Enyel Rosario pulled the Cubs within 6-4.

Following the Jayden Kim RBI single that put the Pirates in front 7-4 in the third, Carlos Altuve kept things close as his two-run triple bulled the Cubs within 7-6 after four. One inning later saw the Cubs offense continue to do damage, with Sandy Sanchez delivering a two-run blast to put the Cubs in front while Rosario added an RBI single to make things 9-7. Those would be the final runs of the game for the Cubs as the Pirates ended the game with three unanswered runs in the sixth, two of them coming off errors, including the game-winning run. Darlyn De Leon led the offense with three hits, and Rosario added two hits and two RBIs. Altuve, Sanchez, and Lumpuy added two RBIs in the loss.

ACL CUBS 17 - ACL BREWERS 16: Talk about some early Fourth of July fireworks. The ACL Cubs and ACL Brewers certainly brought the fireworks as they combined for 33 runs, with the Cubs scoring four times in the final inning to pick up the win. There is far too much offense to cover everything, but just know that the Brewers scored all their runs in two innings, both of which were eight-run innings.

Edgardo Ordonez led the way with two hits and four RBIs for the Brewers, with Antony Gomez and Garrett Mitchell adding three RBIs each. The Cubs had two four-run innings, with one coming in the final inning and an additional seven-run inning to seize command in the middle innings.

Joan Delgado continued his hot start to the season with three hits and four RBIs, with Anderson Suriel adding three RBIs. Yidel Diaz added three hits and two RBIs from the No. 8 hole with five other players recording RBIs. Getting to the final inning, where the Cubs entered the inning trailing 16-13, it was the singles from Delgado and Diaz that brought the Cubs within one and had them threatening for more. Then came the Jose Escobar fielders choice that tied the game, but also led to the winning run on a throwing error to cap off an exciting game.

INDEPENDENT LEAGUES

CHICAGO DOGS 8 - LINCOLN SALTDOGS 4: In a rare Monday night game for the Chicago Dogs, they kicked off a four-game series and their seven-game homestand with the Lincoln Saltdogs and topped them 8-4 to begin the series. Most of the offensive damage came in the early innings, which was a good thing, as Steven Lacey wasn't at his best. The right-hander got through six innings, allowing three runs, but did settle in late to finish with one walk and seven strikeouts.

He was given some early-game offense, with Zion Pettigrew delivering a two-run single in the second to make things 2-0. Lincoln responded with back-to-back homers from Drew Devine and Gary Mattis to tie things up in the third before pushing across an additional run on a Luke Roskam single to put the Saltdogs on top 3-2. That was most of the Lincoln production, as they not only watched their lead evaporate in the bottom of the third but scored just one more run the rest of the way.

It didn't take the Dogs long to regain the lead, with Jacob Teter connecting for a three-run shot at the bottom of the third, and that hit pushed across the winning runs. Chicago added a run on the Nick Dalesandro double in the fourth before closing out their scoring on another Teter homer in the fifth to make things 8-3 before winning 8-4.

Teter paced the offense with two hits and five RBIs, as both of those hits were homers.
