CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today placed infielder Frank Schwindel on the 10-day injured list with low back strain and recalled infielder Alfonso Rivas from Triple-A Iowa.
Rivas, 25, is in his third stint with the Cubs after he broke camp with the club (optioned to Iowa April 16) and then was on the major league roster April 22-June 10. He has played 38 games for the Cubs, hitting .194 (18-for-93) with two doubles, one triple, two home runs and 13 RBI. In six games with Iowa this season, Rivas has a .346 average (9-for-26) with two doubles, one home run and four RBI. Rivas last season made his major league debut with Chicago, hitting .318 (14-for-44) with one home run, three RBI and a .388 on-base percentage in 18 games. In 58 games with Iowa last year, Rivas batted .284 (56-for-197) with 13 doubles, four homers and 32 RBI. Acquired from Oakland for infielder Tony Kemp on January 13, 2020, Rivas owns a .290 average (261-for-900) with 57 doubles, five triples, 15 home runs, 124 RBI and a .393 on-base percentage in 247 career minor league games. He was selected by Oakland in the fourth round of the 2018 Draft out of the University of Arizona. Schwindel, 29, is hitting .237 (54-for-228) with 10 doubles, eight home runs, 33 RBI and 15 walks in 62 games for the Cubs this season
