CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today selected right-handed pitcher Erich Uelmen (pronunciation: Eric ULL-men) from Triple-A Iowa. Left-handed pitcher Daniel Norris has been designated for assignment.

Uelmen will wear uniform number 46 and looks to make his major league debut in today’s 1:20 p.m. CT game at Wrigley Field against the New York Mets.

Uelmen, 26, is 3-3 with six saves and a 2.79 ERA (13 ER/42.0 IP) in 28 games for Iowa this season, walking 23 and striking out 52, good for an average of 11.1 strikeouts per 9.0 innings. He has limited hitters to a .197 average (29-for-147), a .320 on-base percentage and a .279 slugging mark, allowing seven extra-base hits in 179 batters faced.

Selected by the Cubs in the fourth round of the 2017 draft out of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Uelmen is 18-28 with eight saves and a 4.33 ERA (159 ER/330.1 IP) in 104 career minor league games (48 starts). He posted a 0.75 ERA (1 ER/12.0 IP) in seven relief appearances for the Mesa Solar Sox during the 2019 Arizona Fall League season before the 2020 campaign was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The six-foot, three-inch Uelmen transitioned from a starting role to the bullpen in 2021, making his first appearance at the Triple-A level that season.

Norris, 29, is 0-4 with a 6.90 ERA (23 ER/30.0 IP) in 27 relief appearances for Chicago this season, walking 21 and striking out 43 batters.
