Cubs Minor League News: Roederer clutch, Caissie raking, Wiggins impressive, more

Thursday was an overall good day for the entire Cubs organization, apart from Javier Assad hitting the IL. Not only did the Chicago Cubs end their losing streak, but the Cubs Minor League System put together a 4-3 showing on the day, with the full-season squads going 3-1.

IOWA CUBS 11 - SAINT PAUL SAINTS 9

Nothing has come easy for the Cubs this week, and that continued on Thursday as they found themselves down five early. Then came a mid-gam onslaught that saw the Cubs score all 11 of their runs in three innings to pick up the much-needed 11-9 win.

Dan Straily continues to give the Cubs some length with six innings pitched, but with five runs allowed and a 5.71 ERA this season, he is still searching for his first win. Straily was jumped on early as a pair of two-run homers from Matt Wallner and Chris Williams put Iowa in a 4-0 hole through two innings before a Yunior Severino solo shot extended the lead to 5-0 in the third.

It took five innings for the Cubs to break through, but this game was tied in a matter of two innings. Three of the runs came home in the fifth, with Moises Ballesteros opening the scoring with a single and Owen Caissie picking up an RBI double late. An error was also mixed in, leading to another run as the Cubs were within 5-3. The Cubs got in on the home run fun in the bottom of the sixth, with BJ Murray Jr and Jack Reinheimer each picking up a solo shot to tie things up 5-5.

For Reinheimer, this was not only his first homer of the season but also an inside-the-park homer, as his contract was recently picked up by the Chicago Cubs.

Immediately after serving up the lead, the Saints responded in a big way. A pair of RBI singles from Tony Kemp and DaShawn Keirsley Jr. anchored a four-run inning and gave the Saints a 9-5 lead.

Not to be outdone, the Cubs offense continued to do their thing in the seventh as they pushed across six more runs to retake the lead 11-9. Murray Jr registered a bases-loaded walk in that inning, with Bryce Windham picking up an RBI single. The big blow in the game came from Cole Roederer who connected for a three-run shot to push home the winning runs in the Cubs 11-9 win.

Roederer led the way with three RBIs, while Ballesteros, Caissie, Windham, and Reinheimer all had two hits.

TENNESSEE SMOKIES 4 - BIRMINGHAM BARONS 1

After suffering a heartbreaking loss on Wednesday, the Smokies shook it off and delivered a 4-1 win on Thursday. Antonio Santos improved to 1-1 on the season, giving the Smokies five innings of one-run ball. His ERA sits at 2.57. His run came off a second-inning sacrifice fly, but it didn't matter as that was the only run the Barons would score.

Tennessee then picked up Santos in the second inning as James Triantos unloaded for a three-run shot in the top half of the third to put the Smokies in front 3-1. That was the game's only runs until the eighth when Yohendrick Pinango worked a bases-loaded walk as the Smokies picked up the 4-1 win.

Christian Franklin added two more hits from the leadoff spot to lead the team, while Alex Troop delivered another impressive outing in relief, striking out five in three scoreless frames.

WISCONSIN TIMBER RATTLERS 3 - SOUTH BEND CUBS 2

The Cubs have been playing very well since the start of the second half and virtually the past month, and that has continued against the first-half champion Wisconsin. Although they lost this one, the Cubs still gave the Rattlers all they could handle, falling 3-2.

Nick Dean continued to do his thing on the mound, throwing four innings of one-run ball, and his ERA sits at 1.97. He gave way to Chase Watkins and Marino Santy, who dropped his High-A debut after allowing two runs in three innings. Dean managed to go pitch for pitch KC Hunt, who gave the Rattlers five innings of one-run, four-hit baseball while striking out five.

Trailing 1-0 after a Ramon Rodriguez RBI grounder in the second, Brett Bateman brought things back to even with his RBI double in the fifth. One inning later, it was Ed Howard's turn to deliver the RBI knock, and he also delivered an RBI double to put the Cubs in front 2-1. It was a lead that didn't last long as Santy served up the game-tying single to Eduarqui Fernandez in the seventh before a sacrifice fly later in the inning was the difference.

Bateman and Howard continued to have a great series as they drove in both runs and combined for four hits.

MYRTLE BEACH PELICANS 5 - FAYETTEVILLE WOODPECKERS 0

Led by a strong pitching performance that saw Jaxson Wiggins and Luis Rujano combine to allow three hits, it was a pair of big innings that led the Pelicans to the 5-0 win. Wiggins got the start going four innings and striking out three before Rujano took over for the final five.

With the score tied 0-0 entering the sixth, Christopher Paciolla ended the shutout with his RBI double, making this a 2-0 game.

Paciolla would come home to score on the Reggie Preciado sacrifice fly, as it was all Pelicans 3-0.

One inning later, the Pelicans offense was at it again as the Carter Trice sacrifice fly and Miguel Pabon single led to two more runs as the Pelicans went on to win 5-0.

Garriola has been a man on a mission in this series and continued that with three more hits. Five other Pelican players had one hit in the win.
