Cubs make several roster moves

CHICAGO, Ill. – The Chicago Cubs activated right-handed pitcher Javier Assad from the 15-day injured list as the club’s “27th man” for today’s doubleheader against the St. Louis Cardinals. Additionally, the Cubs recalled right-handed pitcher Ethan Roberts from Triple-A Iowa and placed left-handed pitcher Luke Little on the 15-day injured list with a left shoulder strain.

Assad, 26, is 4-3 with a 3.04 ERA in 16 starts for the Cubs this season and is expected to start game two of today’s doubleheader. He was placed on the 15-day injured list on June 27 (retroactive to June 24) with a right forearm extensor strain.

Roberts, 27, has made three relief appearances for the Cubs this season. He hasn’t allowed a run in 3.0 innings pitched. With Triple-A Iowa this season, Roberts did not allow a run in 12 relief appearances (13.1 IP) and struck out 18.

Little, 23, is 3-1 with a 3.46 ERA (10 ER/26.0 IP) in 30 relief appearances—one start—for the Cubs this season while holding hitters to a .174 batting average (15-for-86).

The Cubs play the St. Louis Cardinals in a doubleheader today at Busch Stadium, with game one scheduled for 1:15 p.m. and game two at 7:15 p.m. CT. Both games can be seen on Marquee Sports Network and heard on 670 The Score and 1200 WRTO.
