Cubs make several roster moves

SAN DIEGO – The Chicago Cubs today placed right-handed pitcher David Robertson on the injured list and recalled infielder Frank Schwindel from Triple-A Iowa. Additionally, the Cubs have selected the contract of left-handed pitcher Conner Menez and optioned right-handed pitcher Adrian Sampson to Iowa.

Schwindel, 29, who was optioned to Iowa prior to yesterday’s game, is hitting .209 (19-for-91) with three doubles, two home runs and nine RBI in 25 games for Chicago this season.

The six-foot, one-inch Schwindel was claimed off waivers from Oakland July 18 of last season. He joined the Cubs July 30 and hit .342 (76-for-222) with 19 doubles, one triple, 13 home runs, 40 RBI and a 1.002 OPS in 56 games. He was the third Cub in the last 60 years (also Joe Pepitone and Andre Dawson) to record 30 RBI in his first 33 games with the club, while his 69 hits in his first 50 games with the franchise were the second-most since 1906 (Al Dark, 73).

Schwindel made his major league debut in 2019 with the Royals, appearing in six games. He signed with the Athletics as a free agent in November 2020 and played in eight games with Oakland in 2021 before he was claimed off waivers by Chicago.

Menez, 26, will wear uniform number 65 and is 1-0 with a 2.16 ERA (4 ER/16.2 IP) in seven games (one start) for Iowa in his first season in the organization. The left-handed pitcher has tossed 2.0-or-more innings in six of his seven appearances and 3.0-or-more-innings in two games in 2022. Menez was acquired by the Cubs from San Francisco during the Triple-A phase of the 2021 Rule 5 Draft.

The six-foot, two-inch Menez spent six seasons (2016-21) in the Giants organization after he was selected by the club in the 14th round of the 2016 draft. All told, the Hollister, Calif., native has appeared in 23 career major league games (four starts), going 2-1 with a 4.04 ERA (19 ER/42.1 IP) and has pitched in 122 career minor league games (86 starts), posting a 29-25 record with a 4.38 ERA (235 ER/483.1 IP) and 538 strikeouts.

Robertson, 37, is 1-0 with five saves and a 1.50 ERA (2 ER/12.0 IP) in 11 relief appearances for Chicago this season.

Sampson, 30, appeared in his first game for the Cubs this season last night vs. Los Angeles (N.L.), allowing two unearned runs in 1.0 inning of relief.
