Roster Move: Cubs claim reliever Edwin Uceta off waivers

by -

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today claimed right-handed pitcher Edwin Uceta off waivers from the New York Mets and optioned him to Triple-A Iowa.

Uceta, 25, was designated for assignment by the Mets this past Wednesday. He was placed on the Mets 15-day injured list April 23 due to a left ankle sprain and transferred to the 60-day injured list July 3 before he was reinstated and optioned to Triple-A Syracuse August 13. Uceta had been claimed off waivers by New York from Pittsburgh April 6 after he was claimed off waivers by the Pirates from Detroit April 2.

The six-foot tall Uceta has pitched in parts of three major league seasons with the Dodgers (2021), Diamondbacks (2022) and Mets (2023), pitching to a 5.80 ERA (26 ER/40.1 IP) with 21 walks and 41 strikeouts in 25 games, all but one in relief. In seven minor league seasons, he is 29-16 with a 3.87 ERA (180 ER/418.1 IP), a 1.24 WHIP, 154 walks and 474 strikeouts, good for an average of 10.2 strikeouts per 9.0 innings.

Uceta was signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Dodgers July 2, 2016, out of the Dominican Republic and was ranked as the organization’s 24th-best prospect by Baseball America following the 2020 season.
