ST. LOUIS – The Chicago Cubs today announced that left-handed pitcher Matt Dermody has been selected from Triple-A Iowa, optioned to Iowa, then recalled to serve as the “27th man” for today’s split doubleheader in St. Louis against the Cardinals. He will wear uniform number 64.

Dermody, 32, is 6-3 with a 3.74 ERA (33 ER/79.1 IP) in 20 games (13 starts) for Iowa this season, walking 18 and striking out 70. In his last eight outings since June 17, he is 4-0 with a 1.21 ERA (5 ER/37.1 IP), 10 walks, 36 strikeouts, a .206 opponent batting average and a .594 opponent OPS. Dermody struck out a season-high 10 batters in 5.0 innings July 9 at Indianapolis.

The six-foot five-inch Dermody signed a minor league contract with Chicago in August of 2020 and appeared in one major league game for the Cubs, tossing a scoreless inning September 6 against the Cardinals at Wrigley Field. Dermody last year pitched with Seibu in the Japan Pacific League before signing a minor league contract to return to the Cubs organization this past February.

Dermody has pitched parts of three seasons in the big leagues with Toronto (2016-17) and the Cubs (2020), combining to go 2-0 with a 5.13 ERA (15 ER/26.1 IP) in 29 relief appearances, walking five with 21 strikeouts.

A native of Norwalk, Iowa, Dermody was selected by the Blue Jays in the 28th round of the 2013 Draft out of the University of Iowa. He has gone 29-14 with five saves and a 3.70 ERA (173 ER/421.1 IP) in 198 career minor league outings (30 starts). Dermody made 20 appearances between 2018-19 due to Tommy John ligament replacement surgery in May of 2018. In 2020, he pitched for the Sugar Land Skeeters before signing with Chicago.
