CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today activated infielder Dansby Swanson from the 10-day injured list and optioned infielder Jared Young to Triple-A Iowa.
Swanson, 29, was placed on the injured list July 8 (retroactive to July 6) with a left heel contusion. In his first year with the Cubs, the right-handed hitting infielder is batting .258 (84-for-325) with 15 doubles, two triples, 10 home runs and 36 RBI in 83 games. Earlier this month he was named to the N.L. All-Star team via the player vote, his second-career All-Star honor (2022 with Atlanta). The six-foot one-inch Swanson signed a seven-year contract with the Cubs as a free agent in December 2022. In parts of eight major league seasons with Atlanta (2016-22) and the Cubs (2023), he owns a career .255 average (859-for-3,368) with 176 doubles, 15 triples, 112 home runs, 447 RBI, a .323 on-base percentage and a .416 slugging percentage in 910 games. Selected first overall by Arizona in the 2015 First-Year Player Draft, the Marrieta, Ga., native was traded to the Braves December 8 of that year in a five-player deal. Swanson made his major league debut in 2016 after just 127 career minor league games, collecting 39 hits in 38 games for Atlanta. In 2021, on the way to helping the Braves to the World Series championship, he hit .248 (146-for-588) with 33 doubles, two triples, a career-high 27 home runs and 88 RBI in a N.L.-leading 160 games. Young, 28, is batting .171 (6-for-35) with two triples, one home run and five RBI in 13 games with the Cubs this season.
