Cubs make a decision on Nick Madrigal

by - Senior Editor -

The Chicago Cubs have decided to non-tender veteran infielder Nick Madrigal, according to reports on Friday.

ESPN's Jesse Rogers first reported it.

Madrigal is now a free agent.

The 27-year-old appeared in 202 games with the Cubs over the last three seasons with a slash line of .251 with two homers, 29 extra-base hits, and 45 RBIs.

In 2024, he hit .221 with no homers and 10 RBIs.

His 2025 projected salary with the Cubs would have been around $1.9 million if they had kept him.

With the emergence of Matt Shaw, Miles Mastrobuonio, and James Triantos, it was fairly obvious that there wasn't as much need for a utility infielder like Madrigal on the Cubs roster in 2025.

In other roster news, the Cubs avoided arbitration with reliever Julian Merryweather, and he will make 1.22 million next season, according to ESPN.
