Report: Cubs place veteran pitcher Drew Smyly on waivers |
The Chicago Cubs have placed veteran pitcher Drew Smyly on waivers according to a report by USA Today's Bob Nightengale.
The Cubs have not yet confirmed this. Smyly has been impressive this season with the Cubs out of the bullpen, posting a 2.84 ERA and 1.18 WHIP with 43 strikeouts over 50.2 innings in 39 appearances. Some contending team will likely scoop him for their playoff run. He is owed $1.9 million for the rest of the season and a $2.5 million buyout on a mutual option for 2025. Following up on @BNightengale’s reporting here. If Drew Smyly clears waivers, the Cubs plan to keep him with the team, per sources. Other teams have 48 hrs to submit a claim, so should know tomorrow. https://t.co/pqaF7CzvL6
