Cubs sign All-Star shortstop Dansby Swanson for $177 million deal

by - Senior Editor -

The Cubs have made a big-time move.

The Northsiders are finalizing a deal for veteran shortstop Dansby Swanson in a seven-year deal worth $177 million, which includes a full no-trade clause.

It is the second-highest total contract behind Jason Heyward's $184 million.

Swanson is the last remaining star shortstop in free agency. The group of four amassed over 1.1 billion in free agency.

In 2022, Swanson hit .277 with 25 homers and 96 RBIs.

For this career, he hit .255 with 102 homers, 411 RBI, and a 16.2 WAR.

The Cubs will have one of the best defenses up the middle in the majors, with Code Bellinger roaming CF, Nico Hoerner at 2B, and now Swanson at shortstop.

Signing Swanson will cost the Cubs their second-rounder next season (around #49) and 500K in IFA pool allowance. However, they picked up a second-rounder (around #70) for losing Willson Contreras so its not too big of a deal.
