Cubs Minor League News: Rookie League action |
The Cubs had all three rookie league teams in action on Monday, but four games were being played as you had a make-up game scheduled with the original three games.
From a result side of things, it could have been better, but the bottom line is all three teams are playing better. It has been a long time coming, but this is the time when you want to be playing more consistently.
In what was a completed game from July 25, you had another low-scoring affair in which the Cubs walked off the Guardians 3-2. We won't dive too deep into this as many of the stats are from players no longer with ACL, but it was Christian More picking up the walk-off walk for the victory. ACL GUARDIANS 5 - ACL CUBS 2: After losing the completed game earlier in the night, the Guardians turned the tables as they topped the Cubs 5-2. Most of the Guardians damage came as part of a four-run fourth inning in what was otherwise a fantastic game. Dilan Granadillo gave the Cubs the lead in the third with a solo shot as that was his first homer of the season. In the fourth, the Guardians put the game away as Simon Rodriguez put them in front for good with a two-run shot. Later in the inning, Sterling Romero picked up the game-winning RBI double while the Esteban Gonzalez sacrifice fly capped off the four-run frame with the Guardians leading 4-1. That lead grew to 5-1 in the fifth after Manuel Mejia connected for an RBI double, while Pedro Ramirez capped off the scoring with a solo shot in the sixth. Ramirez was responsible for one of the Cubs three hits as Granadillo, and Frank Hernandez picked up the other two.
Well, there isn't much to say about this game as the Tigers bludgeoned the Cubs. This was a make-up from July 27, but if you are a Cubs fan, you probably wished this game was never played. Trailing 1-0 in the second inning, this game was over almost before it started as the Tigers brought home eight runs in that second inning to grab a 9-0 lead. Four of those runs came home on the Reylin Perez Grand Slam, with Yoel Viloria adding a three-run shot later in that inning. Not only did the Tigers score eight times in the second, but they had another massive inning by scoring nine times in the fifth. Unlike their first big inning, none of those runs came via the long ball as four RBI singles led to eight runs, with a bases-loaded walk and an error leading to the other two. The Tigers capped off the scoring with a pair of sixth-inning RBI singles from Randy Perea and Perez as the Tigers rolled the Cubs 22-0. The Cubs had just four hits in the game as Geuri Lubo, Daniel Ferreira, Jose Herrera, and Moises Febrillet grabbed those hits.
Needless to say, the Cubs afternoon against the Tigers was a struggle. Not only were they swept in a doubleheader, but they were outscored 29-0 in the process. Take away the four-run first inning in this one, and things were much more competitive, but the Cubs still came away with the loss. The Tigers did most of their damage in the first inning when four of their seven runs came home. Two of those runs came off a bases-loaded walk and wild pitch, while Geury Estevez connected for a two-run single. Moving to the third, the Tigers extended their lead to 6-0 as Andri Leon and Estevez connected for RBI singles. The Tigers capped off their scoring in the fifth inning when Leon left the building for the solo shot in the 7-0 Tigers win. The Cubs managed just five hits, with Jose Escobar leading the way with two.
While both games against the Tigers were ugly, the DSL Red squad made up for that with a great offensive showing. Despite surrendering four runs in the first and five across the first two frames, it was the Cubs offense and bullpen that responded as they outscored the Mets 9-3 the rest of the way. Stanly Guzman set the tone in the pen as he tossed the only scoreless outing for the Cubs while recording five strikeouts in two innings. All four of the Tigers first-inning runs came on a pair of singles, with Carlos Oviedo and Jose Melendrez connecting for two-run singles. Willy Fanes added an RBI single in the second as the Mets raced out to a 5-0 lead. It was in the third inning when the Cubs began to come back as the Elizaul Chalas triple brought home the Cubs first two runs before the wild pitch made things 5-3. One inning later, the Cubs had the lead as the Alexis Hernandez single was sandwiched between a bases-loaded hit by pitch and a steal of home to put the Cubs in front 7-5. Over the next two innings, the Mets battled back to tie things up, only to have Chalas pick up the go-ahead RBI double in the sixth to make things 8-7. Chalas would score on a wild pitch later that inning which proved to be the winning run, as Enrique Valdez connected for the solo homer in the seventh to make things 9-8. The Cubs won by that score and secured a strong win for the DSL Red. Charles was the man of the day on offense, as he was responsible for three of the team's six hits with three RBIs. Hernandez, Joan Delgado, and Yidel Diaz recorded the final three hits, with Hernandez driving in two additional runs.ACL CUBS 3 - ACL GUARDIANS 2
