Bears signing former Patriots quarterback Trace McSorley |
A depth signing at an all-important position.
The Chicago Bears are signing former Patriots quarterback Trace McSorley to their practice squad after a workout, according to multiple reports on Tuesday. McSorley, Ian Book, and Bryce Perkins were part of today's QB workout with the Bears. McSorely recently had workouts with the Cincinnati Bengals and the Indianapolis Colts. The Bears needed some depth at the position after Justin Fields was listed as doubtful for Sunday's game against the Raiders. McSorley has been a backup quarterback at the NFL level since he was drafted in the sixth round (#197) of the 2019 NFL Draft by the Ravens. In the 2023 preseason, he completed 1 of 4 passes for four sacks and got sacked twice. The Patriots released him on Aug. 28. In nine career games with the Ravens and Cardinals, he has thrown for 502 yards with a touchdown and five picks for a passer rating of 48.8. He was a standout performer during his college years at Penn State. He threw for an impressive 9,899 passing yards, 77 touchdowns, and 25 interceptions with a 59.3% completion rate during his career. He also added rushed for 1,697 yards and 30 touchdowns. Bears rookie Tyson Bagent will likely get the starting gig at quarterback on Sunday with journeyman Nathan Peterman as his backup. The Bears (1-5) will face off against the Raiders (3-3) at Soldier Field on Sunday at 12 pm CT.
