CHICAGO — Looking to potentially add some quarterback depth behind Nick Foles and Mitchell Trubisky, who are slated to compete for the starting job, the Chicago Bears will try out an undrafted rookie next week. Former North Texas quarterback Mason Fine will reportedly fly to Chicago this weekend and, following a precautionary quarantine enforced by COVID-19 protocol, will have his audition on Wednesday.
Fine was not drafted after finishing the 2019 season as the all-time leader in passing yards and passing touchdowns in Mean Green history. Fine's biggest impediment is his stature, as the 5-foot-9-inch QB is definitely undersized for his position. However, his speed and surprisingly strong arm are impressive enough to warrant a shot at competing in the NFL, and the Bears are going to provide Fine with that opportunity. Just spoke with Pawhuska High School head coach Matt Hennessy, and he confirmed that QB Mason Fine is flying out on Sunday for a tryout with the #Bears that will take place on Wednesday. Fine will take a COVID test on Sunday and quarantine for two days. QB Mason Fine is flying to Chicago this weekend for a tryout with the Bears, per his former high school mentor.
Fine played college football at the University of North Texas and finished as the program's all-time leader in passing yards (12,505), and passing touchdowns (93).
