He batted .255 with 42 HR, 390 RBI and 103 stolen bases in 1,624 career games, and was a World Series champion with Florida (1997) and Arizona (2001). Counsell scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning of Game 7 in the 1997 World Series against Cleveland and was named Most Valuable Player of the 2001 National League Championship Series against Atlanta.

Counsell is a 1988 graduate of Whitefish Bay (Wisc.) High School and 1992 graduate of the University of Notre Dame. He and his wife, Michelle, reside in Whitefish Bay. They have four children, sons Brady and Jack and daughters Finley and Rowan. His oldest son, Brady, currently plays baseball at the University of Minnesota.
