Report: Cubs want to trade for three-time All-Star Pete Alonso

by - Senior Editor -

The Chicago Cubs are reportedly going after one of the top sluggers in the major leagues this offseason.

The Cubs “are going to do everything they can” in order to trade for Pete Alonso, according to a report by Bruce Levine on 670 The Score.

He said the Cubs are interested in pairing Alonso with Cody Bellinger.

“Alonso in the last year of a contract, obviously 46 home runs 100 RBI (in 2023), you know, a guy that pounds the ball,” Levin said. “Sure, he strikes out, but you know who doesn't these days? And he's one year away from being a free agent.”

Alonso hit .217 but blasted 46 homers with 118 RBIs this season.

In five seasons, he is a three-time All-Star that has hit 192 homers, including winning rookie of the year and smacking 52 dingers.

Alonso has one year left until he hits free agency.

“You're going to have to trade something really good for him even though there's only one year left,” Levine said. "Alonzo is that middle-of-the-order hitter to go along with Bellinger. We’re stretching it in this conversation on Oct. 2 thinking they are going to get both of them, but that would be their plan going into the offseason. A slugger like Alonso, a great piece like Bellinger."

“I don’t think their plan is to go backwards.”"

He signed a one-year deal worth $14.5 million with the Mets last January to avoid arbitration.

This should be an interesting story to follow all offseason because the Cubs certainly have enough trade chips to pursue Alonzo if they decide that is the way to go.

Alonzo hitting in Wrigley Field would be a home run derby for sure, possibly 50 or more homers in a season.
