ESPN on Cubs trading young core, possibly Kris Bryant

by - Senior Editor -

The Chicago Cubs have been mostly stuck in idle this offseason as teams have gotten better around them including the recent blockbuster addition of All-Star slugger Paul Goldschmidt to the rival Cardinals.

The Cubs have a budget they are trying to stick with reportedly and they are more likely to get an influx of talent through a trade or two which might include players from their young core on the roster.

ESPN's Jesse Rogers says most of the the youngsters are possibilities including former MVP Kris Bryant.

"In any case, the Cubs would be more likely to strike a deal with a club willing to take on major league contracts, such as those of Kyle Schwarber, Ian Happ, Albert Almora Jr., Willson Contreras, Victor Caratini and, yes, perhaps even Bryant, whose name has come up with other teams," he said. "The catching market is flooded right now, so a deal there seems remote, and one involving Bryant would make much more sense as he gets closer to free agency in a couple of seasons. But not exploring every avenue to get better on offense would be negligent on the Cubs' part. It's all in an effort to find that rhythm again, the one that took the team to three straight NL Championship Series."

This is an interesting offseason and it should be exciting to watch what the Cubs do in the coming months to try to make it back to the World Series in 2019.
