Cubs cut ties with Hector Neris |
The Hector Neris era is over in Chicago.
Cubs veteran reliever Hector Neris has been DFA'd and has cleared waivers, according to multiple reports, including ESPN's Jesse Rogers. Neris had a 3.89 ERA with 17 saves, five blown saves, and a high 1.52 WHIP this season. If Neris had reached 60 games with the Cubs this season (14 shy), then a $9 million player option would have been on the books for him for 2025. Also, if a team decides to pick up the 35-year-old Neris as a setup man type for the stretch run this season, then the Cubs would get a pro-rated minimum salary for him. This is an interesting move as the Chicago Cubs push for a wild-card berth down the stretch of the 2024 season. Youngster Jack Neely, who was acquired in the Yankees trade for Mark Leiter Jr., will be called up to take his roster spot. In six games at Triple-A Iowa since the trade, he has a sparkling 1.35 ERA and 0.750 WHIP with three saves in 6 2/3 innings. Overall this season combined with his time with the Yankees and Cubs minor league systems, he has a 2.42 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 76 strikeouts in 48 innings.
